MEET PRO MAKEUP ARTIST: Diana Manzanares
From The Big Screen All The Way To The American Ballet Theatre
Hello, beauties! I’m Diana Manzanares, a New York-based makeup artist, and I’m so excited to share my journey, tips, and favorite products with you. Makeup has been a lifelong passion for me, sparked by none other than the iconic Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. Watching the legendary Rick Baker transform Michael into a werewolf on MTV’s Making the Video was like a lightning bolt of inspiration. I knew right then and there: this is what I was meant to do.
Since that moment, makeup has taken me on the wildest and most rewarding adventure. I started in the fashion world after earning an art degree in college. My passion led me to Paris, where I studied special effects and prosthetics at Make Up For Ever. Paris wasn’t just about education—it was where I began building my network and soaking in the artistry at fashion shows across New York, Miami, Milan, and London.
Today, I’m proud to say I’m a Union makeup artist with NY Local 798. My work spans TV, film, commercials, and even the American Ballet Theatre. Every day feels like a new opportunity to grow and learn, and that’s the beauty of this industry. If you love what you do, there’s always more to discover.
Diana’s Advice for Aspiring Artists
To all the dreamers out there wanting to carve their place in the makeup world, my number one tip is this: network, network, network! Your connections are everything in this industry. The relationships I’ve built with fellow makeup artists, friends, and mentors have been the foundation of my career.
Diana’s Success Strategies
One thing I’ve learned over the years is the importance of adaptability. This industry is ever-changing, and staying relevant means constantly growing and evolving. Never stop learning, whether it’s about new products, techniques, or trends. Your willingness to perfect your craft will set you apart and open doors to exciting opportunities.
Habits of a Successful Artist
Being your own boss is both empowering and challenging, but professionalism is key to thriving in this industry. From how you present yourself to the state of your makeup kit, every detail matters. Always show up prepared, polished, and ready to create.

Pro Tips for Elevating Your Artistry
Skin is everything! Customizing skincare to suit each client’s needs is a game-changer. Prepping the skin before applying makeup ensures a flawless finish that lasts. Don’t stop at the face—give the same love to the body. Body lotion, a touch of shine, and camouflaging any blemishes bring everything together for a cohesive look.
And here’s another tip: be prepared for anything! My kit includes essentials like Tylenol, deodorant, toothpaste, and floss. These small details can make a big difference for clients and models, and it shows you care about their comfort and confidence.
Makeup is more than artistry; it’s about connection, passion, and attention to detail. Whether you’re backstage at a fashion show or prepping a client for their big day, every moment is a chance to create something magical. Thanks for letting me share my journey with you—I hope it inspires you to chase your dreams and embrace your unique path.
