MEET PRO MAKEUP ARTIST: ALANA MARIA SCHIDT
Becoming Queen (B)ridal: English Major turned Bridal Maestra
Hey there! I’m Alana, and I've been working as a professional makeup artist for over 12 years. My journey to this point has been a bit unconventional. I graduated college with a bachelor's degree in English Education and taught at a residential high school for girls with behavioral issues. After a brief stint in grad school, I felt unfulfilled and needed a change. I joined the opening team of a new Sephora store, where my passion for makeup and skincare was fully realized. I started networking, assisting anyone and everyone, never turning down work, and BAM! here I am! My niche in the industry is bridal beauty. I co-own a company, Kindred Beauty Co., which specializes in bridal, special event, and editorial makeup and hair.
Advice for Aspiring Makeup Artists
Stay humble. It may sound cliché, but we are constantly evolving as human beings both personally and professionally. When I started doing makeup, I checked my ego at the door and was eager to learn from anyone who would give me a shot! This mentality has helped me build countless professional relationships and connections that have propelled me forward in my career.
Stretch for Success
Take risks! Reach out to other artists you admire and ask if they need help. Be willing to hustle hard. The more experience you gain and the more connections you make, the better your chances of building a successful career.
My 3 Gems for a Successful Career
Never stop learning—continuing education is crucial! I constantly take classes, watch videos, and subscribe to content from my favorite artists.
Also, ask for help! Find a mentor and don't be afraid to seek advice.
Kindness is key—be kind to yourself, your clients, and your colleagues.
My Favorite Gerard Cosmetics Product
The Slay All Day Setting Spray is an AMAZING addition to my kit. I use it as a primer and again as a setting spray at the end of makeup application. Let me tell you, your makeup will be LOCKED IN. I also love the Slay The Bake Pink Setting Powder. I use it with a powder puff under the eyes and in other areas that need a little diffusing. It brightens up the complexion so naturally.
Pro Tip : Listen Up!
Listen to your clients! Everyone’s comfort level with makeup is different, and often people are nervous about having it done because of a previous bad experience. Ask questions and listen to understand what the client truly wants.
